Genome

By the end of Final Fantasy IX, you've heard the word genome so many times your head spins. Just incase you missed what exactly they are, I'm here to explain it to you.

Terra is an ancient civilization that thrives on engulfing new planets. During this period, the souls of its inhabitants rest in the ship known as the Invincible. Genomes are created for the people to live in once Terra has successfully engulfed a new planet. However, until the genomes are inhabited, they are merely soulless vessels, incapable of emotion.

There are, however, three exceptions. Kuja, Zidane, and Mikoto were created with the ability to think and feel on their own, however each had their own specific purpose. Kuja was created to incite war on Gaia so that Terra might engulf it; Zidane was created to take Kuja's place; and Mikoto was created as a backup. Though these three were able to think for themselves, Garland planned to control their actions.

At the end of the game, when Garland is gone, the ignorant genomes are taken to the Black Mage Village to start a new life. This is the first time they start to learn things and think for themselves. Simple things like the fact that water flows fascinates them. Together with the Black Mages, they create a new life -- a life of their own.
